Thinking About Getting Divorced?

Let’s talk about divorce. It’s so common, yet can still reflect negatively on those involved. The reality is that it’s often the best decision for everyone, especially if kids are involved. You might have to deal with some unsolicited advice from relatives (and *ahem* strangers) who think you should “stay together for the kids,” but unless they plan on raising your kids too, no one else gets to call the shots, right? Besides, divorce is not the end of the world and can be handled in a way that respects the emotions involved, and the practical issues – like your assets.

The Great Cash Divide

Depending on how everything plays out (and hopefully everyone plays nice), any assets and money you share will likely be divvied up. In a perfect world, you would split everything evenly. This might involve a bit of creative thinking, but the cash in your bank accounts should be easy enough to split.

If you have joint accounts, this will involve opening up brand new accounts that are separate from each other and making sure each person is entitled to their share.

In hopes of obtaining a clean and healthy financial separation, it may be a good idea to seek the professional expertise of a financial advisor or lawyer.

Selling the Family Home

As they say “don’t judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes”.

That quote rings very true for me and especially in relation to this very topic.  As a young (at least I still feel young), fellow divorcee and father, I know first-hand the stresses and anxieties that come with the entire process. Aside from the emotions, attachments and memories made in the home, are the anxieties, nerves and overwhelming fears of leaving it behind. Having gone through the motions myself, it has afforded me the knowledge and experience to help others deal with selling their home in an efficient and effective manner.

We like to deal with one step at a time – if both parties are moving out, then selling the family home is the next step. Simple things like getting a home evaluation can make this process easier and in fact, provides the best chances for both parties to get what they want – top dollar for their home.

This is one of the areas where Team Elfassy has the experience and know-how to help.  As a member of the Divorce Angels, I’ve helped hundreds of couples through the process of selling their home while navigating a breakup.

We apply our unique and personalized approach to listing and preparing a home for sale that is geared to towards getting you the result that is right for your family in this next phase of life. Our strategy is always tailored to the objectives of whom we are working with – our clients. This might mean getting the best offer possible or streamlining the selling process so everyone is able to move on as quickly as possible.

Renting vs Buying?

Bottom line – you are going to need a new place to live.If you have kids and pets to think about, you will need space for them. The first question you need to ask yourself is this: are you a renter or a buyer?

In either case, we can help! You have enough on your plate as it is, so let us handle it. With input from you, we will do all the grunt work and scout out the perfect new home for you and your family.

Whatever your happy ending looks like, we will do our part to make that happen.
