Liberty Village offers a lifestyle of variety within walking distance. With access to recreational activities, transportation, commercial and retail opportunities, this versatile neighborhood attracts young professionals from a variety of industries including media, tech and design.

The red brick and towering smokestacks of the industrial Victorian architecture that characterises this neighborhood, along with the adaptive reuse and revitalization of the area, bring together the remnants of an old world with the up-and-coming innovations of the new. Together they create an authentically distinct, urban landscape.

History

Liberty Village has a significant place in Canada’s early history as it was once part of Garrison Common, the military fortification that served the Town of York in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Near to the community, is the Garrison Common memorial park where the military base, Fort York, sheltered Canadian forces from the Americans during the Battle of York in 1813.

The area once housed both the Toronto Central Prison and the Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women, It was named “Liberty” because it was the first ground that released prisoners walked on as freed people.

With the completion of the railway in the 1850’s, industry surged, and it was not long before warehouses and factories dominated the area. Eventually, with the shift of industry, these same buildings were transformed into trendy lofts and highly sought-after studio offices and live/workspaces.
